When I heard about Wii Fit coming out I was oh so excited. I loved the wii sports that came prepackaged with the console and noticed it always made me sore in my shoulders/back/arms when I played for any real length of time. When I saw the Fit game come available for pre-order I signed up for it the same day.

I was one of the lucky ones who actually got their preorder filled the day it released and my lovely little wii fit arrived on the 21st. Oh how excited was I. I could not wait to get home open it up and play my ass off (literally I hoped). So home I went, did my usual afternoon things and then settled in for a long time of play. I figured if I could spend hours doing wii bowling, I would spend days running thru all the little mini games in the fit.

I went thru all the setup, there are some sync things you have to do to get the balance board to see your Wii and vice/versa, but it was fairly easy to get going. I boot up and oh look at the cute little talking balance board! I will admit they did a fairly good job of making it cute without making it over the top cutsey and annoying. at least that was my first thought.

The first thing you do of course is setup your Mii and your fitness profile and goals and such. The game runs you thru a series of little things that compile your Wii fitness test which you are recommended to do every day. It takes your height, your bithday, your weight calculates your BMI and runs you thru some balance tests to try to get you to adjust if necessary your center of balance. The game is HUGE on your center of balance using it as an indication of how strong your core and lower body are. The tests aren’t hard, it even asks how much your clothes weigh roughly to accuratley calculate your actual body weight. I figure this is cake! It then presents you with your results and gives you your wii fit age.

My first time out of the gate, I am all thru and waiting for my results. Then the wii does something no other game or gaming console has ever done. In it’s cute little voice it tells me I’m fat and proceeds to adjust my mii accordingly by giving her a little spare tire. To be fair, it doesn’t actually say fat, it says “that’s overweight!” Then it tells me my fit age is 41(after drumroll and lights dimming around my mii who is then highlighted by a spotlight showcasing her new spare tire). It then points out that not only am I fat, my fit age is 11 years older than my real age and this is bad. Thank you wii, I appreciate that.

Now had I been feeling pissy, or had I not really wanted to get to the games part of it and actually see what it was all about I probably would have picked up the balance board and thrown it just to see if the little one on the tv would have noticed this and sent out a little scream as it went flying across the room. I however restrained myself, after all I am not stupid and am aware that i’ve put on a little bit of weight post wedding and such, and I really want to see what this thing is all about. I am not one for gyms or lots of running etc, so having something that makes me motivated to get a little more active is not a bad thing I think.

I have to admit, the little sections and games are really quite nice. I haven’t spent as much time with the yoga section as I probably should, but the balance games, aerobics and even the strength training are really quite nice. The more you do the more new activities you unlock, the better you get at each activity, the more time or reps you open up for each one. It’s really kind of a good little system. Currently I have a few addictions in the mini sections, including the rhythm boxing which I love love love (who doesn’t like to punch at crap?), the hula hoop also is fun and shockingly it all ends up giving you a pretty decent workout.

Day 1 I got off the balance board and noticed my legs were shaking and i was all sweaty and out of breath after about 40 minutes, after day two my abs and arms started to get sore, currently I am on day 7 doing between 30 and 40 minutes of it a day and I’ve already lost a little bit of weight and according to my little talking balance board I’ve improved my balance some. I do however wish that it would finally stop making that little “Oh!” sound the first time you get on the board. It makes me feel like I’ve hurt it or am about to crush it like a little twig.

We’ll see how the progress continues. I do think perhaps it would be ok for the little board to maybe not tell you EVERY day you’re fat, perhaps just actually say it once and then don’t say it again until it’s been a few weeks and you’ve had a chance to actually make some progress towards your goals, but I spose motivation is motivation and mine is now to get that friggen belly off my formerly slimtastic little Mii. If you can find it or pre-order it anywhere I suggest you do, it’s actually fun and gets you active- just be forewarned it will probably call you fat
